Heavy Rain Pounds Southern Crete; Travelers Warned of Slippery Roads

Saturday, 2 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Rain fell across several parts of Crete on Saturday, May 2, with the highest rainfall totals recorded primarily in southern and mountainous areas, as well as western regions of the island. Precipitation was uneven, with some coastal and eastern zones remaining largely dry. Tourists visiting the mountainous interior, the south coast, or western Crete should be aware that roads in these areas can become slippery after rain, and some mountain passes may experience reduced visibility. Hiking trails in the White Mountains or Samaria Gorge area may be affected; check local conditions before heading out. If you are based in Heraklion or the north coast, conditions were generally better. Carry a light rain jacket if traveling inland or toward the south. Weather in early May can be variable across the island, so plan accordingly.
