Greece's Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas is traveling to Heraklion next Wednesday to address ongoing issues with the BOAK, the east-west highway crossing Crete from Chania to Sitia. The visit follows a period of serious traffic congestion in the Chania area, which has disrupted road travel across the western part of the island.
The BOAK is a major infrastructure project that, once complete, will significantly improve travel times between Crete's main cities and tourist destinations. Construction and incomplete sections currently cause bottlenecks, particularly around Chania.
Tourists driving between Heraklion and Chania, or heading to western Crete, should allow extra travel time and check local traffic conditions before departing. Delays are most common on the national road near Chania. The minister's visit signals renewed government attention on accelerating construction progress.
