Crete Court Hears BOAK Highway Expropriation Compensation Case

Wednesday, 1 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A legal hearing has been scheduled at the Crete Court of Appeal to determine compensation payments for landowners whose properties were expropriated for the construction of the BOAK, the major east-west highway crossing the island. The Municipality of Apokoronas filed the petition on behalf of affected residents in the Apokoronas area of western Crete, a region covering villages inland from the Chania coastline. For visitors, the BOAK project is one of the most significant infrastructure developments on the island. When completed, it will substantially reduce travel times between Chania, Heraklion, and eastern Crete. Construction continues in phases across the island. Travelers driving through the Apokoronas area should expect occasional road works and diversions near active construction zones. Checking local traffic updates before long drives across Crete is advisable.
