Reckless overtaking nearly causes head-on crash on Crete's BOAK road

Thursday, 9 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A dashcam video circulating online shows a dangerous overtaking maneuver on the BOAK, Crete's main east-west highway connecting Heraklion to the eastern part of the island. The driver involved crossed into oncoming traffic during the overtake, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision. No injuries were reported. The BOAK is a primary route used by tourists traveling between Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, and Elounda. Drivers on this road are advised to exercise caution, maintain safe following distances, and avoid overtaking in unclear conditions. Reckless driving incidents on Cretan roads are not uncommon during the summer season when traffic volume increases significantly. Tourists renting vehicles are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local road conditions and drive defensively.
