Two earthquakes strike Gavdos, Europe's southernmost island

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Two earthquakes struck near Gavdos, a small island south of Crete, registering magnitudes of 5.4 and 4.6 on the Richter scale. Gavdos is located approximately 65 kilometers south of the Sfakia coast in the Libyan Sea and is the southernmost point of Europe. The tremors caused concern across Crete, particularly in the southern regions. Earthquakes are common in this part of the Mediterranean due to active tectonic fault lines, and seismic events of this size are not unusual for the area. No tsunami warning was issued. Tourists visiting Crete should be aware that minor to moderate earthquakes occur regularly in the region. If you feel a tremor, stay calm, move away from windows and unsecured objects, and follow guidance from local authorities. Current travel to Crete remains unaffected.
