Chania Lights Bonfires for Third Annual Kledonas Festival

The city of Chania is hosting its third annual revival of the Kledonas, a traditional Cretan midsummer custom celebrated on the eve of Saint John's Day (June 23-24). The event takes place at Girokomeiou Square and is organized by the Municipal Nursing Home of Chania, the Halepas Cultural Association, the Hellenic Mediterranean University's Electronics Engineering Department, and the Municipality of Chania. Kledonas is one of Greece's oldest folk traditions, involving the lighting of bonfires, communal singing, and fortune-telling rituals tied to the summer solstice. Locals jump over the flames as a symbol of purification and good luck for the year ahead. Visitors in Chania on June 23 or 24 can attend the event at Girokomeiou Square to witness an authentic piece of Cretan folk heritage in a festive, community atmosphere.
