Island Overview
Wednesday 27 May brings a persistent overcast to Crete from west to east. Temperatures remain comfortably warm, with afternoon highs of 26°C in Heraklion and Elounda at the top end, and 24°C at Rethymno and Ierapetra at the lower end. No meaningful rain is expected; trace amounts of 0.2 to 0.3 mm are flagged for Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Makrigialos, well below any nuisance threshold.
North Coast vs South Coast
The northern coast from Chania to Heraklion sits under a solid grey sky. Wind gusts reach 19 km/h at Heraklion, the day's strongest reading on the island. Chania is considerably calmer at under 10 km/h. Overnight lows along the north drop to 16-17°C. The south coast stays warmer throughout. Ierapetra and Makrigialos open at 19-20°C and stay mild, sheltered from the north by the island's spine. Afternoon winds there stay below 12 km/h. Hersonissos and Malia on the central north coast see slightly broken cloud, the only two locations showing partly cloudy conditions today.
Mountain Conditions
Cloud cover obscures the upper flanks of the White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno. Hikers planning routes above 1,000 metres should expect reduced visibility and damp air at altitude. Lower gorge trails remain accessible; carry a light waterproof layer.
Sea, Wind and UV
Seas are calm across the island. Wave heights peak at 0.5 m near Hersonissos and Malia, and fall to 0.14 to 0.16 m on the sheltered south coast. Sea temperatures range from 19.8°C at Sitia to 21.4°C in Chania bay, warm enough for comfortable swimming. Wind is light to moderate everywhere, with only Heraklion approaching 20 km/h.
UV index reaches 8 island-wide despite the cloud cover, placing it in the very high category on the WHO scale. Overcast skies at this latitude in late May do not offer meaningful UV protection. Sunburn is possible within 25 to 30 minutes for unprotected fair skin.
Swim Verdict
Good conditions for bathing across the island today. Swell is minimal, there is no chop, and water temperatures are 20-21°C. The south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos is near flat, ideal for families and young children. The one non-negotiable: apply sunscreen before entering the water.
Practical Tip for the Day
Put sunscreen on before leaving your accommodation, not just at the beach. UV index 8 under cloud is still very high. Use SPF 30 as a minimum, SPF 50 for children and fair skin. Reapply after every swim. A wide-brimmed hat adds useful coverage, especially on the breezy north coast around Heraklion.
