Back to newsThe Port of Heraklion Authority (OLH) has signed an official contract with HEC, a specialized waste management company, for the comprehensive treatment of liquid waste at Heraklion Port. The agreement establishes a full system for collecting, processing, and disposing of wastewater generated by vessels docking at Crete's busiest port. This initiative brings the port into compliance with international maritime environmental standards and contributes to cleaner waters around the harbor area. For tourists arriving by ferry from Athens, the Greek islands, or Italy, the port remains fully operational with no disruption to services. The project reflects broader efforts by Cretan port authorities to modernize infrastructure and protect the coastal environment. Visitors arriving by sea at Heraklion can expect the same access to the city center, with the port located just a short walk from the historic core.
