Rare Ancient Surgical Tool Reveals Sophistication of Greek Medicine

Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceGreek Reporter/1 min read
Archaeologists excavating the ancient Greek city of Heraclea Sintica have uncovered an exceptionally rare surgical instrument used in antiquity to remove bladder stones. The device, known as a lithotome or stone-cutting tool, is among the few surviving examples of its kind from the ancient world, offering direct evidence of the sophisticated medical practices performed in Greek cities during antiquity. The find highlights the advanced state of Greek medicine, which developed precise surgical techniques centuries before modern medicine. Visitors with an interest in ancient Greek history and archaeology will find this discovery a reminder of the depth of knowledge and skill practiced across the Hellenic world. While Heraclea Sintica is located in present-day Bulgaria rather than Crete, comparable ancient medical and cultural artifacts are on display at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which is open to visitors year-round.
