Back to newsGreek authorities are implementing a new removal program targeting pufferfish (lagokephalos) in Greek waters, including around Crete. The plan, announced by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, involves coordinated fishing efforts to reduce the population of this invasive species, which arrived via the Suez Canal and has spread widely across the Mediterranean.
Tourists should be aware that pufferfish are extremely toxic if consumed and should never be eaten under any circumstances. While swimming alongside one poses no direct danger, handling or eating the fish can be fatal. If you see pufferfish caught or washed ashore at a Cretan beach, do not touch them and alert local authorities. The removal program aims to protect both marine ecosystems and public safety along Greek coastlines.
