Byzantine Frescoes Come Alive in Cretan Author's Debut Book

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Cretan author Polymnia Synodinou has published her debut book, "The Frescoes with the Halos," a literary exploration of Byzantine Crete through its surviving religious wall paintings. The book guides readers through the island's rich Orthodox heritage, focusing on the extraordinary frescoes found in medieval churches and monasteries scattered across Crete's villages and mountain regions. Byzantine art flourished on the island between the 9th and 15th centuries, leaving behind hundreds of painted churches, many of which remain open to visitors today. Sites such as the Arkadi Monastery, the frescoed churches of the Amari Valley, and the painted chapels around Rethymno and Heraklion offer direct encounters with this heritage. Visitors interested in Byzantine Crete can find these churches through local cultural associations and municipal tourism offices, with many accessible year-round at no charge.
