Back to newsResidents and local organizations in the Heraklion-Moires area are staging a new protest against government plans to establish a migrant reception center in the Athanatos locality, south of Heraklion. Local groups are mobilizing in opposition to the Ministry's proposal, and an emergency meeting was convened Saturday morning by Heraklion mayor Alexis Kalokerinos to coordinate the community response.
Demonstrators are expected to block the Heraklion-Moires road, one of the main routes connecting Heraklion city to the Messara plain and the southern coast. Tourists driving between Heraklion and destinations such as Matala, Agia Triada, or Phaistos should anticipate potential road disruptions and allow extra travel time. Checking local conditions before departing is advisable. The protest reflects ongoing tensions between central government migration policy and local communities in several parts of Crete.
