Back to newsThe Municipal Unit of Malia, a popular coastal resort on Crete's northern coast, is receiving an upgrade to its street lighting system. Local authorities are installing new LED fixtures and modernising the underlying electrical infrastructure across the area. The project aims to improve visibility and safety on public roads throughout the municipality. For visitors, this means better-lit streets at night, particularly relevant in Malia, which draws large numbers of tourists due to its beaches, nightlife, and proximity to the Minoan Palace of Malia. Some temporary disruption to road access or parking near works sites is possible during the installation period. The LED upgrade also reflects broader efforts by Cretan municipalities to reduce energy consumption while improving public safety standards in high-traffic tourist areas.
