Extreme Heatwave Grips Crete as Europe Battles Record Temperatures

Saturday, 27 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
A significant heatwave is currently affecting much of Europe, including Crete. Temperatures across the island are elevated, making midday outdoor activities uncomfortable and potentially hazardous. Visitors should plan sightseeing and hiking in the early morning or after 5pm, carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, and seek air-conditioned spaces during peak afternoon hours (12pm to 5pm). Beaches remain enjoyable but sun protection is essential: high-SPF sunscreen, hats, and regular shade breaks are strongly recommended. The heatwave is expected to ease in parts of Europe by Sunday evening, which may bring some relief to Crete in the days ahead. Check local forecasts daily, as conditions can shift quickly. If you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat, seek medical attention promptly.
