Back to newsShark sightings have been recorded in Greek waters, from the Saronic Gulf near Athens to the seas around Crete. Greece is home to several shark species, most of which are harmless to humans. Sightings remain rare and incidents are extremely uncommon. Tourists swimming or snorkeling around Crete's coastline should be aware that these animals are present in the Mediterranean but pose minimal risk. Authorities do not currently advise against swimming. As with any open-water activity, standard precautions apply: avoid swimming far from shore at dawn or dusk, and stay close to designated beach areas monitored by lifeguards. Local beaches across Crete operate normally.
