Heraklion residents stage traffic protest over migrant facility

Wednesday, 17 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Residents of Athanati, a neighborhood in the 3rd Municipal District of Heraklion, held a protest against the planned installation of a migrant reception facility in their area. Demonstrators staged a symbolic traffic disruption at the site, drawing the attention of local television crews. Protesters stated that their opposition has broad support across Heraklion, with the phrase "All of Heraklion is with us" repeated during the gathering. The demonstration caused brief, localized traffic disruption near Athanati, on the outskirts of Heraklion. Visitors driving in that area may encounter occasional slowdowns if further protests take place. The situation is a local administrative and community issue and does not affect tourist areas, the city center, or the port. Travelers should stay informed through local news if passing through the eastern outskirts of Heraklion.
