Greece acts against toxic pufferfish invasion threatening Cretan waters

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (GEOTEE), Crete branch, has issued a statement urging a structured response to the growing presence of pufferfish (lagocephalus) in Cretan waters, rather than public alarm. Pufferfish are an invasive species in the Mediterranean and are highly toxic if consumed, as their organs contain a potent poison with no antidote. GEOTEE is calling on authorities to implement a coordinated management plan involving fishermen, local government, and health services. For tourists, the key safety point is simple: never eat pufferfish caught locally, even if offered by well-meaning vendors. If you see one on the beach or in a fishing net, do not handle it. The species poses no threat to swimmers through contact, but consuming it can be fatal. Always buy fish from licensed restaurants and markets.
