Turkey Blocks LGBTQ+ Cruise Ship Carrying Nearly 2,000 Passengers

Thursday, 9 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Turkish authorities refused to allow an LGBTQ+ cruise ship carrying nearly 2,000 passengers to dock at a Turkish port. The vessel, operating as a dedicated LGBTQ+ cruise, was denied entry, forcing it to alter its itinerary. Turkey does not legally recognize same-sex relationships and has increasingly restricted LGBTQ+ public gatherings in recent years, making such refusals consistent with the country's official stance. This incident has no direct impact on travel to Crete or Greece. Greece is generally welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers, and Crete in particular has several gay-friendly destinations, including areas in Heraklion and Chania. Cruise passengers whose itineraries include both Turkish and Greek ports should be aware that rules and social attitudes differ significantly between the two countries. If your cruise calls at Turkish ports, check current entry policies with your cruise operator before departure.
