Back to newsA powerful "Omega block" weather pattern is driving an intense heatwave across Europe, with record temperatures recorded in Belgium, Italy, Spain, Britain, and France. The extreme heat has prompted thousands of people to seek relief at beaches, lakes, and rivers, and at least 46 people have drowned in France and Germany as a result. While Crete is not directly mentioned, this same high-pressure system is influencing temperatures across the Mediterranean. Visitors to Crete should expect intense heat during this period. Stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity between noon and 4pm, swim only at supervised beaches, and never swim alone in open water. Apply high-factor sunscreen regularly and keep children and elderly travelers in shaded or air-conditioned spaces during peak hours.
