Back to newsEurope experienced a significant heatwave between June 15 and 30, with temperatures exceeding 35°C recorded across regions home to 410 million people. Crete, like much of southern Europe, was affected by these extreme conditions. Heat-related mortality figures during this period were described as unprecedented.
For visitors to Crete during summer months, high temperatures are common but intense heat waves carry real health risks. Stay hydrated and carry water at all times. Avoid outdoor activities, hikes, and direct sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00. Wear light, loose clothing and use high-factor sunscreen. Choose air-conditioned accommodation and seek shade during midday hours. If you feel dizzy, fatigued, or nauseous in the heat, move indoors immediately and drink water. Elderly visitors and young children are especially vulnerable and should take extra precautions during heat alerts.
