High Airfares Hit Lasithi Tourism as Visitor Numbers Drop

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Tourism in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete is running below last year's figures, according to the president of the Lasithi Hoteliers Association, speaking on local radio station Cretaone 102.3. He identified high airline ticket prices as the primary factor slowing visitor numbers this season, with elevated fares making the destination less accessible compared to competing Mediterranean locations. Lasithi, home to the Minoan palace of Zakros, the Dikteon Cave, and the beach resort of Elounda, relies heavily on direct international flights. Travelers planning a trip to the area should compare flight options well in advance, as booking early tends to yield significantly lower fares. Those already in Crete can reach Lasithi by road from Heraklion in roughly 90 minutes. Local hotels and accommodations may offer competitive rates this season given the softer demand.
