Back to newsDuring heatwave periods in Crete, several beaches offer natural shade from trees, rocks, and gorges, making them practical alternatives to exposed sandy stretches where umbrella rentals can be costly or limited. These naturally sheltered spots allow visitors to cool off in the sea while avoiding direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, typically between 12:00 and 17:00. Beaches near gorge exits, such as those along the south coast, often benefit from cliff overhangs and dense vegetation. Forested northern coastal areas also provide tree canopy cover close to the shoreline. Tourists visiting during July and August, when temperatures regularly exceed 35C, are advised to seek out these locations, carry plenty of water, apply high-SPF sunscreen, and avoid prolonged sun exposure during midday hours regardless of shade availability.
