Back to newsHeraklion Port Authority has signed a new contract with HEC (Hellenic Environmental Center) to manage liquid waste disposal at the port. The agreement covers the collection, transportation, and treatment of wastewater generated by vessels docking at Heraklion, Crete's busiest port and main gateway for ferry connections to Athens and the Greek islands. The partnership is part of the port's ongoing effort to meet EU environmental standards and reduce marine pollution in the harbour area. For visitors arriving by ferry, operations remain unaffected. The initiative reflects a broader push by Cretan port authorities to improve sustainability infrastructure, which supports the long-term health of coastal waters popular with swimmers and water sports enthusiasts across the island.
