Deadly Puffer Fish Invades Greek Beaches, No Known Antidote

Saturday, 11 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The lagocephalus, a toxic puffer fish species, has been spotted on several Greek beaches, including locations in Crete. This invasive fish contains tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison with no known antidote, making it dangerous to handle or consume. Authorities advise beachgoers not to touch any puffer fish found in the water or washed ashore, and to keep children and pets away from them. If you spot one on a beach, notify local lifeguards or municipal authorities immediately. The fish should never be eaten under any circumstances, even if offered at a taverna, as it is illegal to sell in Greece. Staying aware of your surroundings while swimming in shallow coastal areas is recommended throughout the summer season.
