Pufferfish (lagokefali) have been spotted in Cretan waters engaging in aggressive feeding behavior, competing with each other over prey fish. The lagokefali, scientifically known as Lagocephalus sceleratus, is an invasive species that has spread widely across the Mediterranean and is now commonly found along Crete's coastlines. These fish are extremely toxic: their flesh, skin, and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a deadly poison with no known antidote. Fishermen are legally required to discard any pufferfish caught and must never consume or sell them. Tourists are strongly advised not to touch pufferfish if encountered in the water or washed up on the beach, and should never attempt to eat them under any circumstances, even if offered by locals.
