Back to newsGreek MP Katerina Spyridaki addressed parliament in a forceful speech about the growing threat of the lagocephalus, an invasive toxic pufferfish species spreading rapidly in Greek and Cretan waters. She described the situation as a survival crisis for local fishing communities and island economies that depend on seafood. The lagocephalus is highly poisonous and has been damaging fishing nets and depleting catches across the Aegean and surrounding seas. For tourists visiting Crete, the key safety point is clear: do not eat lagocephalus under any circumstances, as it contains tetrodotoxin, a potentially fatal poison with no antidote. Reputable Cretan tavernas do not serve it, and local fishermen are required to discard any caught. If you see an unfamiliar fish being sold informally, avoid it and report it to local authorities.
