Back to newsCrete is marking the 160th anniversary of the Arkadi Holocaust, one of the island's most defining historical moments. In November 1866, Cretan fighters and civilians sheltering inside Arkadi Monastery near Rethymno chose to detonate the gunpowder store rather than surrender to Ottoman forces, sacrificing their lives in an act that drew international attention to the Cretan independence struggle. A full program of commemorative events is planned across the island through December 2026. The main ceremonies are expected around November 9th, the anniversary date. Arkadi Monastery, located approximately 23 km southeast of Rethymno, is open to visitors year-round and remains one of Crete's most visited cultural and historical sites. Tourists interested in Cretan history will find this an especially meaningful time to visit, with exhibitions, ceremonies, and cultural events likely scheduled at venues across Rethymno and beyond.
