Back to newsTen years after opening, the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna has established itself as one of Crete's most significant cultural landmarks, reshaping how visitors explore the island's archaeological heritage. Located near Rethymno in central-northern Crete, ancient Eleutherna was a major city-state from the early Iron Age through Roman times. The museum, built on-site at the excavation grounds, displays finds from decades of digs including jewelry, weapons, and burial artifacts dating back to 900 BC. The site sits roughly 25 kilometers southeast of Rethymno and is accessible by car via the road through Margarites village. Visiting hours and admission fees are available on the museum's official website. The Eleutherna route pairs well with nearby Margarites, known for its traditional pottery workshops, making it a full-day cultural excursion from the Rethymno coast.
