5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Crete Near Siteia

Saturday, 25 April 2026/Haniotika Nea/1
A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the sea approximately 23 km southwest of Goudouras, near Siteia in eastern Crete, in the early hours of Friday, April 24. Aftershock activity has continued in the area since the main event. Siteia is a port town and popular destination on the eastern tip of Crete. While the earthquake was felt across the region and caused disruption, seismic activity of this nature is not unusual in the eastern Mediterranean. Tourists currently in or planning to visit eastern Crete should monitor local authorities and hotel staff for updates. If you experience shaking, move away from windows and follow standard earthquake safety guidelines: take cover, hold on, and wait for the shaking to stop before exiting buildings. Check with local transport providers for any impact on ferry or road services in the Siteia area.
