Back to newsThis year marks 85 years since the Battle of Crete (May 20-31, 1941), one of the most significant engagements of World War II in the Mediterranean. German paratroopers launched a massive airborne invasion of the island, met by Allied forces and Cretan civilians who resisted fiercely despite being vastly outnumbered. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on all sides before Allied forces withdrew. Greek Australian communities are holding commemorations honoring the soldiers and civilians who fought and died.
For visitors to Crete, the Battle of Crete Museum in Heraklion and the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda Bay near Chania are meaningful sites to visit. The cemetery holds the graves of over 1,500 Allied soldiers. Local villages across western Crete also hold annual memorial services, offering travelers a chance to witness this deeply respected chapter of Cretan history.
