Back to newsPrincess Anne visited Chania to take part in the annual commemorations marking the Battle of Crete, the World War II battle fought in May 1941 when Allied and Greek forces defended the island against a German airborne invasion. The ceremonies are held each year around May 20 in the Chania region, centered on Souda Bay Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, one of the most visited historic sites in western Crete. The cemetery holds the graves of over 1,500 British, Australian, New Zealand, and other Allied soldiers. Tourists in the area during late May can attend the public memorial ceremonies at Souda Bay, which are free and open to visitors. The site is located approximately 6 km east of Chania town and is accessible by car or taxi.
