Back to newsThe Region of Crete and the Crete Development Organization (OAK) have signed a programmatic agreement for the Omalos Reservoir project in the Chania area. The Omalos plateau, located at around 1,100 meters altitude in the White Mountains, is best known as the starting point for the Samaria Gorge hike, one of Crete's most visited natural attractions. This formal agreement sets the framework for developing or upgrading the reservoir infrastructure in the area. While the project is in its planning and contractual phase and no immediate disruptions to visitor access are expected, hikers heading to Samaria Gorge should check current trail conditions with local authorities before their visit. The Samaria Gorge trail typically operates from May through October, subject to weather and safety assessments by the relevant forest management service.
