Crete Doubles Firefighting Drones for 2026 Wildfire Season

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete's Civil Protection authority has announced reinforced firefighting measures for the 2026 summer season, including double the number of surveillance drones and additional aerial resources such as water-dropping aircraft. Regional official G. Tsapakos stated that Crete is better prepared than ever to respond to wildfires, emphasizing that clearing dry vegetation from private land and plots remains a critical prevention step. For visitors, this means increased aerial monitoring across the island during peak fire-risk months, typically June through September. Tourists hiking or exploring rural and forested areas should stay on marked trails, avoid lighting fires or barbecues outside designated areas, and check local conditions before venturing into the countryside. In the event of a wildfire, follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services. The general emergency number in Greece is 112.
