Harmless Soupfin Shark Washes Ashore in Chania, Crete

Thursday, 28 May 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Beachgoers at Kamisiana beach, located near Chania in western Crete, were confronted with an unusual and unpleasant sight when what appears to be a dead shark washed ashore. Local reports identify the animal as a soupfin shark, a species occasionally found in Mediterranean waters. While the discovery caused concern among visitors, soupfin sharks are not known to pose a significant threat to swimmers. If you are planning to visit beaches in the Chania area, be aware that marine animals occasionally wash ashore along the Cretan coastline. Should you encounter a dead or stranded sea creature on any beach, avoid touching it and notify local authorities or the port authority. Kamisiana beach remains accessible, and there is no indication of any wider safety risk to swimmers in the area.
