Back to newsStarting Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the renovation project on Eleftheriou Venizelou street in Gazi, a coastal village just west of Heraklion, enters its second phase, bringing updated traffic restrictions to the area. Gazi is a popular destination for visitors heading to the nearby Heraklion Archaeological Museum annex, local tavernas, and beachfront spots. During this phase, drivers should expect lane changes, possible road closures, and increased congestion along the main artery through the village. Tourists renting cars or using taxis between Heraklion city center and western Crete should allow extra travel time and consider checking local detour signage before departure. Pedestrian access to shops and restaurants in the area is expected to remain open. The works are part of a broader urban renewal initiative for the district.
