Back to newsElafonisi is a beach located at the southwestern tip of Crete, roughly 75 kilometers from Chania. It is one of the island's most visited natural sites, known for its shallow turquoise lagoon and sand that takes on a pink hue from crushed shell fragments. The beach is technically a small islet connected to the mainland by a sandbar that can be crossed on foot in knee-deep water. The area falls within a protected nature reserve, so facilities are limited and visitors should bring water, sunscreen, and food. The drive from Chania takes approximately 90 minutes via the Kissamos road. Buses run daily from Chania bus station during summer. Arrive early, as the beach draws large crowds by midday in July and August. Dogs are not permitted in the protected zone.
