Back to newsGreek coast guard officers rescued 47 migrants near Gavdos, the small island located south of Crete, in the latest of a series of ongoing rescue operations in the area. A patrol vessel was dispatched and safely recovered all individuals from a small boat in distress. Gavdos, Europe's southernmost point, sits along a active maritime migration route from North Africa and the Middle East toward Europe, making such rescues a recurring occurrence in these waters.
For tourists visiting the region, these operations do not affect travel to Gavdos or southern Crete. Ferry services to Gavdos from Paleochora and Sfakia continue to operate normally. Visitors should be aware that coast guard vessels may be active in surrounding waters, and any sighting of people in distress at sea should be reported immediately to the Hellenic Coast Guard by calling 108.
