Back to newsGreek authorities and consumer protection agencies are warning about a new form of ATM skimming fraud currently targeting users across Crete and Greece. Criminals are installing concealed devices on ATM card slots to copy card data and record PIN numbers, often using small hidden cameras positioned above the keypad. Tourists are particularly at risk as they frequently withdraw cash upon arrival or near popular sites.
To protect yourself, always cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN. Before inserting your card, check the card slot for anything loose, misaligned, or unusual. Prefer ATMs located inside bank branches rather than standalone machines in tourist areas or on quiet streets. If your card is retained unexpectedly by a machine, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to local police before leaving the area.
