Crete Marks 85-Year Anniversary of WWII Invasion and Fierce Resistance

Friday, 22 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Each year in late May, Crete commemorates the Battle of Crete (Machi tis Kritis), one of the most significant events of World War II. In May 1941, German paratroopers launched a massive airborne invasion of the island, met by fierce resistance from Cretan civilians, Allied forces, and Greek soldiers. The battle lasted ten days and resulted in enormous casualties on both sides. Rethymno MP Kefaloyannis marked this year's remembrance ceremonies with a statement highlighting the enduring place the battle holds in Cretan identity and collective memory. For visitors, this period brings memorial events, wreath-laying ceremonies, and historical exhibitions across the island, particularly in Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno. The War Museum in Heraklion and the Battle of Crete Museum in Chania are worth visiting for context. Expect some road closures near ceremony sites during official commemorations.
