At least 20 of those on board are minors. Greek coast guard and rescue services are responding to the incident.
Kaloi Limenes is a small coastal village on the southern shore of Crete, roughly 70 kilometres south of Heraklion city. The area is known for its quiet anchorage and association with the biblical voyage of Saint Paul.
Tourists in the region may notice increased coast guard activity along the southern coastal road. The operation is not expected to affect travel to nearby sites such as Matala or Phaistos. Visitors should avoid the immediate coastal area around Kaloi Limenes until the operation concludes.
