5.7 Earthquake Shakes Eastern Crete; Seismologists Say Activity Normal

Saturday, 25 April 2026/CretaOne/1
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck northwest of Goudoura in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete. According to seismologist Gerasimos Chouliaras, the event was the main shock in a normal seismic sequence, preceded by approximately 50 smaller micro-earthquakes. Seismologists assess the activity as typical for the region and do not consider it unusual or alarming. Crete sits in one of Europe's most seismically active zones, and minor to moderate earthquakes are a regular occurrence. Tourists visiting eastern Crete should be aware that aftershocks may follow in the coming days but are expected to be smaller in magnitude. No significant damage or injuries have been reported. If you feel shaking, move away from windows and unsecured objects, and follow guidance from local authorities or hotel staff.
