Greece Proposes E-Scooter Ban for Minors Amid Rising Accident Rate

Friday, 8 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Greek authorities are moving to ban minors from riding electric scooters on public roads, following a rise in traffic accidents involving the vehicles. The proposed measure would apply island-wide, including Crete, and is part of a broader national push to improve road safety amid growing scooter use in urban and tourist areas. For visitors to Crete, electric scooters are a popular way to get around towns such as Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno. If the ban is enacted, rental operators will be required to verify the age of riders before allowing use. Adults renting scooters should expect stricter ID checks at rental points. Helmets are already legally required for scooter riders in Greece. Tourists traveling with children should note that minors would not be permitted to ride scooters independently on public roads under the new rules.
