Sonic Boom Rattles Crete's Messara Plain, No Damage Reported

Wednesday, 20 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Residents across the Messara plain in central-southern Crete were startled midday by a very loud bang that was heard across multiple areas of the region. The noise caused widespread alarm among locals. Authorities believe the sound was likely a sonic boom, caused by an aircraft breaking the sound barrier. No damage or injuries have been reported. Tourists visiting the Messara area, which includes popular sites such as the Minoan palace of Phaistos and the Matala beach area, should be aware that the incident was a one-time acoustic event with no safety implications. There is no cause for concern and no impact on travel or access to local attractions.
