Back to newsResidents and local organizations gathered in Anopoli, a village in the Sfakia region of southern Crete, to mark the 256th anniversary of the Daskalogiannis Revolution of 1770. The annual commemoration honors Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a Sfakian merchant and chieftain who led one of the first major uprisings against Ottoman rule in Crete, decades before Greek independence. The event took place in Anopoli, a small mountain village perched above the Libyan Sea, about 12 km from Chora Sfakion on the south coast. For visitors, the Sfakia area is already popular for hiking the Imbros Gorge and accessing Agia Roumeli via ferry. Commemorations like this reflect the region's deep pride in its resistance history. Travelers passing through can learn more at the local squares and monuments in Anopoli, which are accessible by car from Chania in roughly 90 minutes.
