WWII Naval Mine Found Off Crete, Area Cordoned Off

Friday, 10 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
An old naval mine was discovered at a depth of 15 meters in the sea near Kokkino Chorio village, in the Chania region of western Crete. The find prompted a response from authorities, who cordoned off the area while specialists assessed the ordnance. This type of discovery is not uncommon along Cretan coastlines, where remnants of World War II activity are occasionally uncovered by divers or fishing equipment. If you are visiting the Chania area, follow any posted warnings or maritime exclusion zones near the site and avoid diving in restricted areas until authorities confirm the zone is clear. Local beaches and tourist areas in Chania remain unaffected. Always check with your accommodation or local port authorities before snorkeling or diving in unfamiliar coastal spots.
