The imposing Gorge Ethiano , officially known as Vorno or Havgas , is located in the south Heraklion prefecture, and is the longest canyon in the north side of Asterousia Range . It starts from the village Ethia and, after tearing Asterousia northwards, it empties its water in the tributary of Anapodaris river , Livaditis , in the fertile plain of Messara , between the villages Rotasi and Mesochorio .
Ethiano Gorge is a very wild canyon that requires canyoning equipment in order to traverse it, due to steep descents. The bed of the gorge is generally dry, like most canyons in Asterousia , but has water after long rainfalls.
The highest descent (rappel) is 65m high, thus making the Ethiano gorge particularly appealing to canyoners . If you are not fond of canyoning and want to meet the canyon, you can walk along the west walls of it, by starting from Ethia .
