Ocean surface temperatures worldwide reached all-time record highs in June, driven by the El Nino weather phenomenon combined with ongoing climate change. While this is a global trend, visitors to Crete are already feeling its effects. Sea temperatures around the island are warmer than seasonal averages, which makes for pleasant swimming but also contributes to hotter, more intense summer days on land. Tourists should expect above-average heat throughout July and August. Practical advice: swim in the early morning or late afternoon, stay hydrated, apply high-SPF sunscreen regularly, and avoid extended sun exposure between 11am and 4pm. Air-conditioned accommodation and shaded beach areas are strongly recommended. Jellyfish sightings may also increase in warmer waters, so check local beach conditions before entering the sea.
