Back to newsThe Museum of Ancient Eleutherna, located near Rethymno in central Crete, is marking its 10th anniversary. Archaeologist Nikos Stampolidis, who led excavations at the site for decades, described Eleutherna as "the lamp that illuminates Crete," underscoring the site's significance to Greek archaeological heritage. Ancient Eleutherna was one of the most powerful city-states in Crete during the Geometric and Archaic periods. The museum houses finds from the ongoing excavations, including jewelry, weapons, and burial artifacts that shed light on life in Crete between 1100 and 600 BC. Visitors staying in or around Rethymno can reach the museum easily by car, roughly 25 kilometers southeast of the city. The anniversary marks a decade of bringing world-class archaeology to a broader public audience.
