Back to newsA minor earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded off the southern coast of Crete, near the village of Tsoutsouras in the Heraklion regional unit. Tsoutsouras is a small coastal settlement on the Libyan Sea, approximately 60 kilometers south of Heraklion city.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are common in Crete, which sits in one of the most seismically active zones in Europe. A 3.2 tremor is generally considered light and is unlikely to cause structural damage or be strongly felt inland. Tourists in the area may notice a brief shaking sensation but there is no cause for concern.
No tsunami warning was issued. Visitors staying in southern Crete near Tsoutsouras, Arvi, or Keratokampos can continue their plans as normal. Local authorities have not reported any injuries or damage at this time.
