The cameras were intended to automatically issue fines for traffic violations, including speeding. The freeze applies across Greece, including Crete, meaning the new system will not be operational in the near future. For visitors driving on the island, current traffic rules remain in effect and are enforced by traditional police patrols. Speed limits on Cretan roads are 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on the BOAK highway. Drive carefully and respect local traffic laws, as manual enforcement continues throughout the island.
